Today, I’m going to tell a story about a special friendship that crosses boundaries. It’s called “The Kabuliwala,” written by the famous author Rabindranath Tagore. Once upon a time, in a bustling city called Calcutta, lived a chatty little girl named Mini. Filled with endless questions and giggles, she was a whirlwind of wonder. While her mother sometimes wished for quiet moments, Mini’s father found her lively spirit delightful.
One sunny morning, as Mini’s father was writing a story, she spotted a fascinating sight from their window. “Look, Father! A Kabuliwallah!” she exclaimed. Dressed in colorful clothes and carrying a mysterious bag, this trader from faraway Kabul captured Mini’s imagination.
At first, Mini was a bit shy, but the Kabuliwallah’s gentle smile and sweet gifts of nuts and raisins soon melted her away. They became friends, sharing silly jokes and stories. Mini loved hearing about his travels and imagining the treasures hidden in his bag (though he always winked and said it was an elephant!).
Meanwhile, Mini’s mother was fraught with anxiety about this stranger. Despite her fears, the friendship between Mini and the Kabuliwallah was allowed to continue. Each year, when the Kabuliwallah journeyed back to his mountain home, he would visit Mini, their bond bridging the gap between cultures and ages.
Tragedy struck when the Kabuliwallah was imprisoned following a misunderstanding. As years passed, Mini blossomed like a flower, making new friends and exploring new interests. Mini gradually forgot her old friend Kabuliwallah.
Years passed, and Mini grew up. On the day of her wedding, the Kabuliwallah, now released from prison, visited their home. Changed by time and hardships, he yearned to see Mini, still imagining her as the little girl he once knew.
Mini, now a bride, couldn’t relate to him as before. The Kabuliwallah realized that just as Mini had grown up, so might have his own daughter back in Afghanistan.
Touched by this poignant reunion, Mini’s father helped the Kabuliwallah return to his homeland, sacrificing some of the wedding’s extravagances. This kind act made the wedding more meaningful, symbolizing the joy of a father’s reunion with his child, far away in the mountains of Afghanistan.
